Guiding Star Southwest LLC, a division of Southwest Coalition, Inc., is searching for Certified Nurse Midwives to join its non-profit mission in expanding life-affirming medical care and trauma-informed childbirth services for women in the Borderland area of El Paso Texas; Las Cruces, New Mexico; and Juárez, Mexico. As an affiliate of the national Guiding Star Project and inspired by St. Mary, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Guiding Star Southwest is committed to removing the fear around pregnancy by equipping women through education, healthcare solutions, and community to embrace fertility, childbirth, breastfeeding, and motherhood. The ideal candidate is a compassionate CNM with a servant’s heart and desire to practice under the midwifery model of care, in line with Catholic & Biblical teaching, and eager to be both a voice and provider for dignifying and wholistic care.

The Opportunity

As we expand on 20+ years of pregnancy help services to now include a new freestanding nonprofit birth center in El Paso, Texas, just 1 mile from the U.S.-Mexico border, we are looking for CNMs to help establish CBAC accredited birth services to journey with women from puberty through menopause, assisting primarily with prenatal care, labor, delivery, and postpartum care, in addition to fertility care, well woman, and education to female patients and couples. To be a successful wholistic CNM, you should be dedicated and focused on providing top-quality wholistic care and education to your patients, focused on “wholism” or whole-person care which considers and integrates a person’s mind, body, and spirit. You must be committed to following the midwifery model of care supporting out-of-hospital birth, and should have a strong working knowledge of trauma-informed women’s healthcare, as well as a patient, caring, and detail-oriented personality.

What the Role Entails

The following are detailed performance objectives for the Certified Nurse Midwife, who will need to be/become licensed in Texas and preferably also in New Mexico. When measuring overall aptitude and cultural fit, all candidates will be benchmarked using these standards.

Performance Objectives:

  • Work respectfully as part of our team of CNMs, RNs, birth assistants, IBCLCs, office staff, etc.
  • Focus on providing high-quality, evidence-based care for women and families.
  • Ordering, performing, and interpreting diagnostic tests, and prescribing treatments.
  • Assisting mothers and couples with prenatal care, labor and childbirth care, postpartum care, and newborn care appropriate to a community birth setting
  • Preparing women for labor and delivery and assisting with the birthing process.
  • Monitoring the health of expectant mothers and their infants.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed and accurate records of examinations, patient history, and pertinent findings in the electronic health record (EHR) and other designated systems. Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing diagnostic findings, measurements, and observations for timely delivery to referring physicians.
  • Agrees with and is willing to uphold and adhere to the foundational principles in accordance with our Personnel Policies and Conflict Resolution Agreement.
  • Counseling and educating male and female patients on natural reproductive health and fertility-awareness based methods of family planning.
  • Performing administrative duties, such as taking patient histories, handling appointments, and processing payments.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
  • Attend staff meetings, training, and education sessions as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Must be comfortable in a God-centered environment with a reverence for life at all ages from conception to natural death
  • NRP, BLS/CPR Certified
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills; Be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to execute duties with little supervision and  work effectively in a team-oriented environment
  • Must have or be willing to acquire a thorough fact-based knowledge of pregnancy, abortion, and related health issues, as well as strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Highest level of personal integrity, must be humbly-confident, hard-working, trustworthy and work with a positive, friendly, and patient attitude
  • Ability to thrive, remain flexible and focused in a fast-paced and evolving work environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and collaborative leadership skills 
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and delegate when appropriate
  • Proficient in commonly-used computer programs and applications, such as Google Workspace, project management apps (Asana), time clock, messaging apps (Slack), and other relevant technologies
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with patients and medical professionals.
  • Must be certified or willing to become certified to perform and interpret obstetrical ultrasounds
  • 2+ year experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife in a birth center or hospital setting (Preferred)
  • Open to shift work and on-call availability at different hours of the night and day.
  • Language: English (Required) and Spanish (Preferred)
  • Regularly required to walk, stand, drive, sit for long periods of time (Required)
  • Must be proficient at entering data in a quick and efficient manner (Required)
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 40 pounds. (Required)
  • License/Certification: Must have/obtain a valid license in the State of Texas. Licensure in New Mexico also preferred.
