Guiding Star Southwest, a division of Southwest Coalition, Inc., is searching for Preschool Assistant to join its mission in in-house child care for employees that dedicate their time to expanding life-affirming medical and birth services for women in El Paso, Texas. As an affiliate of the national Guiding Star Project and inspired by St. Mary, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Guiding Star Southwest is committed to delivering trauma-informed healthcare that respects the whole person by considering a woman’s mind, body, and soul. The organization’s focus spans the full spectrum of women’s health, from puberty through perimenopause, and emphasizes fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and motherhood, while striving to reduce trauma by advocating against societal pressures that may compromise the natural functions of a woman’s body. The Opportunity

As we expand our services to encompass a birth center in alignment with Wholistic Feminism, we are seeking a dedicated Preschool Assistant to play a vital role in supporting our mission and those that serve in providing wholistic services. The Preschool Assistant will be responsible for fostering a nurturing and educational environment for young children. The Preschool Assistant will be a key figure in providing a supportive environment for young children. Responsibilities include creating engaging educational activities, assisting with daily routines, and ensuring the overall well-being of the children in our care. To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate should be passionate about early childhood development, possess a patient and caring demeanor, and be detail-oriented. A dedication to providing a wholistic approach to child care, considering a child's physical, emotional, and social well-being, is essential.

What the Role Entails

The Preschool Assistant will be responsible for assisting in planning, implementing, and supervising daily activities for a designated group of children at Guiding Star Southwest. They will support the implementation of curricula in the Preschool Area as well as take on supervisory responsibilities should the director be absent. 

Performance Objectives:

  • Ensure a safe and healthy environment for children by adhering to health and safety procedures and regulations related to Preschool facilities.
  • Supervise and engage with children from drop-off to pick-up, creating a nurturing learning environment through age-appropriate activities.
  • Collaborate with the Director in planning daily activities and actively participate with the children during these activities.
  • Maintain a developmentally appropriate room arrangement, rotating equipment weekly.
  • Keep accurate attendance records and manage various aspects of the child center, including scheduling and resources.
  • Effectively communicate with staff, parents, and external stakeholders on a daily basis.
  • Provide lessons in line with Guiding Star Southwest's Core values, Catholic, and Biblical teachings.
  • Assist in training and professional development of staff to stay updated with practices and regulations.
  • Remain in the preschool area during the shift and attend staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Maintain child and organizational confidentiality, organized files, and a clean workspace.
  • Monitor emails, messaging apps, and Slack throughout the day for important information and messages.
  • Follow company and preschool manual, policies, and procedures 
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Prioritize tasks, delegate when needed, and adapt to a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace applications.
  • Clean and disinfect workspace daily, following health and well-being policies.
  • Exhibit a positive attitude and support the organization operations as assigned by the Operations Seat
     

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, child development, or a related field (Child Development Associate Credential equivalent).
  • Relevant experience in Preschool, preschools, or early learning centers.
  • Familiarity with Texas state licensing regulations for Child Carel centers.
  • Must undergo comprehensive background checks.
  • English and Spanish speaking is preferred (not required).
  • Ability to move through all program areas, interact with children and parents, and lift/carry items (>40 pounds).
  • Must have reliable transportation and perform physical functions necessary for program instruction, including squatting, bending, and kneeling.

This position is offered on a volunteer basis, and unfortunately, it is not compensated.
